- Normally you should only include your most recent ten years of work experience on your resume. There are exceptions, but typically employers are most interested in your most recent experience, and going back more than ten years on your resume can age you.

Administrative Assistant Certificate, Any College, City, State

- Only include this section if it adds information that is relevant to the job you are seeking.
- You may also include hobbies here, but only if they are positive and relevant to the job you are seeking.

Why is it important?

The formatting and layout of your résumé is perhaps as critical to its reception as the content itself. It's well-known that each individual document gets a very short amount of time to make an impression. To make an impression, the content must be clear. (The content must also be good in the first place, but that's beyond the scope of this particular article.)

Date ranges

Hyphens are for hyphenated words only. For ranges of 'things', such as numbers or dates, use 'endashes' (so-called because it's historically the width of an N in the current font). Compare:

1985 – 1988
1985 - 1988

Note that I used a single space to surround the endash. It's perfectly alright to not have this space there. If you don't use a space, the improvement is even more dramatic:

Optimize for skimming

Make sure you use straight lines in your document. Things like misaligned bullets in lists can slightly slow down the reader.

Avoid long lines of unbroken text. The human eye has a hard time reading long lines due to difficulties in 'tracking' – if you have too much space between the end of one line and the beginning of the next, the eye can get lost for a long time (relatively speaking). In the worst cases, this can lead to outright frustration in reading the document.
