Anne Roe (1904 – May 29, 1991) was an American clinical psychologist and researcher who studied creativity and occupational psychology. Her publications included The Making of a Scientist (1953) and the Psychology of Occupations (1956).

Upon graduating from the University of Denver, she attended Columbia University, following the recommendation of Thomas Garth. Ann Roe's theory is the most deterministic approach. Roe believed that the type of parenting one receives influences the career choice of child - innate tendencies and expression of needs. Career choices gratify one's needs. Children whose parents provide a warm, accepting, and protected environment choose person-oriented occupations. Also, according to Roe’s theory, career choice has a lot to do with psychological needs which develop through the child’s interactions with caretakers and/or parents, that is, people make career choices based on the nature of relationships with their caretakers from birth. Born in Denver, Colorado, her parents were Charles Edwin Roe and Edna Blake. There were three siblings. Roe received her Bachelor's (1923) and Master's (1925) degrees from the University of Denver. She received her Ph.D. at Columbia University (1933). Five years later, she married the paleontologist George Gaylord Simpson. She became stepmother to his four daughters. Roe served as a research associate and professor at Harvard's Graduate School of Education before founding and directing the school's Center for Research on Careers. In 1963, Roe became full professor, the ninth woman in the history of Harvard University to become a tenured faculty member, and the first woman to be tenured in the Harvard Faculty of Education.[1] In 1967, the Roes retired in Tucson, Arizona, where she held an adjunct lectureship position at the University of Arizona.[2] She died on Wednesday, May 29 at her home in Tucson, Arizona.[3]

Learning and Cognitive Theories

Social learning theories place an emphasis on self knowledge. When you have the right skills and knowledge and believe in your ability to succeed, you tend to have a higher impact and greater success rate. For example, career theorist John Krumboltz developed the Happenstance Learning Theory and advocates teaching people how to create and take advantage of unplanned events. By capitalizing on these opportunities, you can better approach an unpredictable work environment.

Development

Developmental career theories purport that individuals adapt in stages to changing roles. Career counseling using this type of theory involves assisting clients to accurately assess themselves. For example, career theorist Donald Super emphasizes that your self-concept changes over time as a direct result of your experiences. Career development becomes an ever-evolving process. His five career development stages include growth, exploratory, establishment, maintenance and decline.

Application

Apply career development theories to better identify career areas that fit your interests and aspirations. By using self-guided assessment tools found on sites such as the CareerOneStop website, you examine how your personality fits into certain careers. This helps you define your action plan for setting a career path. Effective career counselors help clients make use of tips, tools, techniques and resources for identifying the right field. When you work at a job you enjoy, your performance and satisfaction tends to be higher.
